Charlotte Emma Aitchison aka Charli XCX is an English singer and songwriter born 1992 in Cambridge, UK. As a songwriter and collaborator, she helped create some of the biggest pop singles of the 2010s, including Icona Pop's "I Love It" and Iggy Azalea's hit "Fancy." As an artist in her own right, her work spanned the edgy sounds of her 2013 debut album, True Romance, to the more straightforward 2014 follow-up Sucker, which featured the US Top Ten single "Boom Clap." As the decade unfolded, she became more prolific and eclectic. Along with founding her own label, Vroom Vroom, she released 2022's Crash and 2024's acclaimed album Brat, a blend of indie sleaze hedonism and confessional songwriting that took her popularity to new heights. Aitchison is the only child of nurse and flight attendant Shameera and entrepreneur and show booker Jon Aitchison. Her mother was born into a Muslim family of Gujarati Indian descent in Uganda, while her father is Scottish. She has spoken extensively about her difficulties at school growing up as a "half-Indian girl with frizzy hair" among predominantly white people, being bullied and discriminated against for her Indian heritage. She demonstrated an affinity for music from an early, self producing her first album at the age of 14. She began posting songs on Myspace in 2008, which led to her discovery by a promoter who invited her to perform at warehouse raves. In 2010, whilst still at school, Aitchison signed a recording contract with Asylum Records, releasing a series of singles and mixtapes throughout 2011 and 2012. In late 2013, "SuperLove" was released as the lead single from the album True Romance, reaching #62 on the UK Singles Chart. After 2014's unremarkable Sucker, she followed up in 2019 with the critically acclaimed album Charli which was also a commercial success. She has since released a further five studio albums, including the 2013 soundtrack to the film Bottoms. Standout albums include True Romance (2013), Charli (2019), How I'm Feeling Now (2020), and Brat (2024). Music critics have characterized Charli XCX's music using a variety of terms, including dance-pop, electropop, pop punk and alternative pop. Lyrically, her songs deal with subjects including sex, cars, hedonism and love. Charli XCX has spoken about her experiences with sound-to-colour synesthesia. She states, "I see music in colours. I love music that's black, pink, purple or red—but I hate music that's green, yellow or brown". The artists stage name Charli XCX came about when she was billed on flyers for Raves under the stage name "XCX" for "kiss Charli kiss", which was her MSN Messenger display name when she was younger.
