Jay Munly | Artist

Munly Jay Munly is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and author based in Denver, Colorado. Munly was born in Quebec, Canada, to Ohio natives Bruce Thompson and Geraldine Ann Manley, and his father was an exploration geologist and the founder of Skull Creek Oil. He spent parts of his childhood in Quebec, Canada, Colorado, and Ohio. He attended Columbia University New York, where he earned a Master's degree in Modern English Literature before starting his music career in the late 1990's. Munly's music has ties to alt-country and Gothic Americana, with themes including religion, violence and dysfunctional relationships. His increasingly narrative-based songs often feature banjo and, more recently, strings. Munly has played a role in the development of the "Denver Sound", music that mixes elements of Americana, country, Gothic, and gospel. He is a member of Slim Cessna's Auto Club and Denver Broncos UK (DBUK) as well as the leader of his own bands, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, and Munly & the Lupercalians. Prior to working with the Harlots, Munly released several solo albums recording with a vast array of musicians. In July 2006, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots was voted the best band in Colorado by over 100 music experts in the Denver Post Underground Music Poll. As a recording artist, Munly has released seven studio albums under his own name, plus others with DBUK and Slim Cesna's Auto Club. Standout Munly albums include Jimmy Carter Syndrome, Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots, Petr & The Wulf, Kinnery of Lupercalia: Undelivered Legion and Songs One Through Sixteen, by DBUK. Munly is also a published author who has received the Southern Heritage Award and the Young North American Playwright Award for his work. Following in his father's footsteps, Munly revealed that he is a Freemason of the thirty-second degree, explaining the significance of the '32°' signed after his name.
