H. P. Lovecraft was an American psychedelic rock band formed 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, by George Edwards (guitar, bass, vocals, Mexican guitarrón) and Dave Michaels (organ, harpsichord, clarinet, vocals, recorder). Ex-folk singer George Edwards met Dave Michaels, a classically trained singer and multi-instrumentalist with a four-octave voice, while playing in a lounge jazz trio at a local Holiday Inn. The duo set about recruiting other musicians and called the new group H.P. Lovecraft, named after their favourite horror writer. The first full lineup also included Tony Cavallari (lead guitar), Mike Tegza (drums) and Tom Skidmore (bass). Skidmore soon departed the band and was replaced by Jerry McGeorge (bass). The band developed a blend of folk rock and psychedelia, highlighted by the oddly striking vocal harmonies of Edwards' folk-influenced singing and Michaels' operatic vocal phrasing. The band only complete two self titled studio albums (I & II) before Michaels decided to leave the band in late 1968. In late 1968 George Edwards and Michael Tegza put together a new band called Lovecraft, and they released two albums before finally disbanding in 1975. Standout releases include H.P. Lovacraft, H.P. Lovecraft II, Valley of the Moon (Lovecraft), and the excellent live album Live May 11 1968. The 1988 compilation album At The Mountains of Madness is also highly recommended. H.P. Lovecraft stand out from many of their late '60s psychedelic contemporaries, due to their multi-instrumental sound pallete and their striking vocal harmonies.
