Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga is an American musician, performer, songwriter and actress, born 1986 in Manhattan, New York. Gaga began playing the piano at age four at the insistence of her mother . Her parents encouraged her to pursue music and enrolled her in Creative Arts Camp. As a teenager, she played at open mic nights and played the lead roles in several high school plays. Later, she studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Now Gaga is one of the current day's most prominent figures in the music industry, having spent the 2000’s working her way into the industry via several bands and songwriting credits. It wasn’t until music mogul Jimmy Iovine signed her to Interscope records, after she was dropped from Def Jam several months earlier, that her career took off. The 2007 debut album The Fame kicked things off with the hits "Just Dance" and "Pokerface". The album was re-released in 2008 as The Fame Monster with additional tracks. After her international breakthrough, Gaga made it her style to continuously adapt her signature sound for each new release. For 2011’s, Born This Way, she adopted a heavy industrial style reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails, whilst 2020’s Chromatica revisits the dance-pop renaissance seen in the 2010s. For a mainstream pop figure with record label backing, she has been consistently challenging in regards to her politics, music and image. Beyond her studio work, Gaga is known for her burlesque infused performances that consistently sell out arenas. Working in film she starred in the smash remake of ‘A Star is Born’, where her performance was hailed by critics. Lady Gaga exists simultaneously in the realms of the corporate business world and the arts world, while maintaining her creativity and artistic authenticity. Standout albums include The Fame Monster (2004), Born This Way (2011), ARTPOP (2013), Joanne (2016), A Star is Born Soundtrack (2018) and her most recent release, Chromatica (2020). Gaga also did two traditional vocal-jazz albums with friend and collaborator Tony Bennett (who passed away in July 2023); Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love for Sale (2021). Time magazine named Gaga one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010 and 2019 and placed her on their All-Time 100 Fashion Icons list. Gaga's philanthropy and activism focus on mental health awareness and LGBT rights, plus she has her own non-profit organization, the Born This Way Foundation, which supports the wellness of young people. Her business ventures include Haus Labs vegan cosmetics brand launched in 2019.
