Rowland Stuart Howard was an Australian rock musician, guitarist and songwriter born 1959 in Melbourne. He was best known for his work with the post-punk group The Birthday Party and his subsequent bands and solo career. Howard wrote the song "Shivers" at the age of 16 while in the band The Young Charlatans. The song was released as a single by Howard's next band The Boys Next Door, who changed their name to The Birthday Party. Howard's brilliant discordant guitar sound defined the sound of The Birthday Party and the other bands including These Immortal Souls and Crime & The City Solution. Howard also collaborated with fellow post-punks Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden from Swell Maps, and released excellent solo work under his own name. Howard was one of the most highlyl revered post-punk rock guitarists and songwriters of the '80s-'90s period. He died in 2009 aged Fifty. Outstanding albums include Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc (with Nikki Sudden), Shotgun Wedding (with Lydia Lunch), Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes. The 2014 compilation Six Strings That Drew Blood is a superb collection of the work of this greatly under-appreciated artist.
