Currents is the Third studio album by Australian neo-psych band Tame Impala, originally released in 2015. On this release Kevin Parker and his pals transition from the psychedelic rock of earlier releases towards pop, by emulating classic psychedelia with modern sounds. But instead of the hazy 60s rock throwbacks, we move firmly into the disco territory and all the better for it. Tame Impala borrows from the best of both psychedelia and pop to create an enriching and emotionally resonant project. Currents deals with the theme of change, of transitions, of a changing of the seasons. For the most part, this theme is kept loose and universal, giving it emotional power. This album has a sense of sonic and emotional depth which only improves upon repeated listening. That's not to ignore that the songs are also incredibly catchy, glittery, fuzzy, warm, and melodic, drenched in mild psychedelic effects that simply serve the music without detracting from it.
