I am a Bird Now is the Second studio album of Antony & the Johnsons, released in 2004. This, their most acclaimed album, followed Antony Hegarty and the band's remarkable self-titled debut album. The artsy, baroque pop magic of the debut mutates into jazz-infected torch songs on I Am a Bird Now. Although obviously the matter of gender is front and centre - right down to the shot of Candy Darling which provides the cover art - Antony adeptly walks the tightrope between speaking of his very personal take on the subject matter, and singing of more universal matters such as growing up, fumbling to form our own identities, and seeking happiness being the person we want to be. In short, the album manages to both be an incredibly personal statement, but not to the extent that it becomes inaccessible and only meaningful to its author. Oh, and one cannot fail to mention Hegarty's sublime voice.
